This post was originally published on a self hosted wordpress blog, and was much longer at the time (unnecessarily so.) I will just give a very short summary of these three Google Analytics alternatives. (All of which I enjoyed using) I currently use Piwik because out of the three, its the only one that is free. Clicky and Crazyegg are both similarly priced (around $15+ per month for sites that aren’t huge.) I think all three of these programs are more user friendly than GA, and I like how you get to know all of what you would want to know from the analytics.
- How long did the user stay on the site?
- Browser sniffing, IP address
- Outbound and inbound links (where did they go to, and what link did they click on to exit, if any?
I would prefer Crazyegg or Clicky over Piwik, but I wouldn’t want to use the former on a regular basis because they’re not free. All of these programs have Wordpress plugins, and Piwik is self hosted (which makes it less expensive for its developers). If you have a web host with Softaculous, you can instantly install Piwik (otherwise, you would have to upload a bunch of files and install it manually.) NameCheap lets you instantly install Piwik -> Softaculous, but the last time I checked Hostgator doesn’t have this script available for you.
CrazyEgg boasts about its heat mapping abilities (visualization of where the user is clicking and what they’re looking at) but Google Analytics and Clicky also have this feature.
Both of these programs cost money but they do have free trials available.
